Environmental Working Group

Coastal Classic Creations®, A California Corporation, links hands with the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., whose mission, through their Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Skin Deep® Database, and EWG Verified™ Program, empowers people to make informed choices when they purchase products. The driving force behind our association is to give consumers peace of mind as they attempt to avoid toxic and potentially-harmful chemicals and contaminants commonly found in consumer goods.

History and Background of EWG's Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Compact for Safe Cosmetics and Skin Deep® Database

EWG's Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a non-profit coalition effort, whose founding member is the Environmental Working Group. As part of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a Compact for Safe Cosmetics was launched in 2004. The Compact was an agreement by companies to only use ingredients that fulfilled the following criteria:

  • Compliance with the European Union’s Cosmetics Directive, widely considered the global gold standard of cosmetics safety regulation
  • Disclosure of all ingredients
  • Publishing and regularly updating product information in the Skin Deep™ Database, an online profile for cosmetics and personal care products and their potential hazards and health concerns
  • Participation in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Between 2008 and 2011, Coastal Classic Creations® submitted our products to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics for purity review. We proudly achieved Full Member Champion Status in November of 2011 after three successful years of adherence to the Compact criteria outlined above. Though the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics officially closed the Compact in August of 2011, it continued its efforts through the Safe Cosmetics Business Network, which promotes non-toxic cosmetic innovation and growth by connecting manufacturers, consumers, and policymakers in the cosmetics industry. As of October 2015, the Environmental Working Group introduced the EWG Verified Program™, which goes a step beyond the Compact.

EWG Verified™ Program

Today, the Environmental Working Group has expanded on its work by creating the EWG Verified™ Program, which ask companies to submit significantly-more detailed information than that which is found on the label to help confirm that they are making full disclosure to their consumers. Companies must disclose all ingredients, including constituent ingredients and any fragrances and flavors and chemicals used to coat mineral ingredients, in accordance with standard naming guidelines. Companies are also required to attest to the fact that their products:

  • Do not contain any ingredients on EWG's "Unacceptable" List or any ingredients on EWG's "Restricted" List that do not meet the applicable restrictions
  • Were manufactured and packaged in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)

We continue to be active participants in EWG and have continued to evolve with them in their current efforts by aligning ourselves with the EWG VERIFIED™ Program. For more information, please visit www.ewg.org.
